From September 17th 2011 until March 16th 2012 the Hermitage will show an impressive selection from the collection of Flemish art from the Hermitage in St Petersburg. An unsurpassed display of approximately 75 paintings and 20 drawings, including several masterpieces of three of the biggest painters in Antwerp: Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens, complemented by works of several well-known contemporaries. One of the highlights is the famous "The descent of the cross" by Rubens.
With 17 paintings and drawings, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) gets the most attention in the exhibition. He was indeed the most important, talented and most influential seventeenth-century Flemish painter. Both religious and secular works illustrate his unparalleled talent. His influence can be found in paintings by Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Frans Snyders and David Teniers.
